First arboretum open day a great success

Despite inclement weather, about a thousand Canberrans turned out to enjoy the first Arboretum Open Day on Sunday.

Activities over the course of the day included cork oak harvesting, performances from the South Coast Portuguese Dance Group, Sing Australia and Franklin B Paverty, wine tastings from local wineries, displays from local volunteer fire brigades, and a barbecue.

A pilot service is now available, with the production service due to commence in the second half of 2003. The pilot content base is small – just 170 items from four institutions – and was carefully selected to test requirements for delivering music related items in a wide range of formats and to explore and demonstrate the rich relationships between printed and performed music materials held by different institutions.

1998: Ten years ago, Bob Hawke was Prime Minister, John Howard Opposition Leader, Ian Sinclair led the National Party and Janine Haines, the Australian Democrats. It was May 9, 1988, the official opening day for Australia's new Parliament House.
