Parliament House construction

The Queen praised all those involved in the project saying they could take great pride in their role in the creation of the building she described as a symbol of Australian unity and democracy.

"The laws of the Commonwealth of Australia are enacted in the name of the Queen and the two houses of Parliament," she said.

"It is fitting therefore, and a great pleasure to me, to offer my best wishes to all those who will be giving their service to the nation within these walls, and to declare open the new Parliament House of the Commonwealth of Australia."

Providing musical entertainment later at the formal reception for the Queen was the band Franklin B Paverty. Members of the band will re-unite under the name 'Snakes Alive' in the Great Hall of Parliament House on the evening of Saturday, May 9 this year. But this time they will be entertaining guests at the 10th anniversary Construction Workers Reunion Dinner, the centrepiece of the anniversary celebrations. Around 250 paying guests, including some from the United States and New Zealand will gather to reminisce and watch a slide show retracing the construction phases.
